Matting Agents

A room with a wooden floor and furniture

Product Overview

Evonik's ACEMATT® range is made up of thermal and precipitated silica, both without after-treatment and with a polymer or wax surface treatment. Tight particle size distributions can ensure a homogenous appearance and high-quality surface finish.

Formulation latitude is broad due to the extensive range of products. There are grades which can be easily incorporated into water and solvent based coatings respectively. Speciality grades for matting non-reducible coating systems also exist.

Low shear and short dispersion times make this a great product to work with. ACEMATT® is easy to incorporate and can be post-added to adjust gloss levels. Suspension stability is normally very good.

Coatings formulated with ACEMATT® exhibit strong matting and sheen reduction, combined with excellent transparency. Surface definition can be retained when substrate impression is important. Options for adjusting the surface feel and roughness are also available. Creating a soft-feel coating is also possible with the correct choice of grade. Enhanced flow and levelling of the coating is observed due to the spherical morphology of the particles. Increasing the loading tends to have a low effect on the build of viscosity for the same reason. Loading levels for reducible systems are normally quite low as well.

Other benefits include good scratch resistance and high chemical resistance. If you are looking to introduce a matt finish to your product then get in touch with us today to find out which grade would be most suitable for you.

Product Features
  • Provides high matting efficiency and low sheen by switching light reflection from a specular to a diffuse paradigm
  • The range includes both thermal and precipitated silica. Both with and without surface after-treatment are available
  • Minimal effect on transparency and colour tone
  • Can produce either a rough or soft feeling surface feel
  • Particles have spherical morphology
Product Benefits
  • Easy to incorporate into a wide variety of formulations. High shear forces are not required and short dispersion times are recommended. Low addition levels are required in reducible systems
  • Post-adjustment of gloss level is possible. Easy to add in the latter steps of the production process
  • Homogenous surface appearance due to tight particle size distribution
  • Adjustable surface texture is possible. Gives a soft-feel finish with certain grades
  • High chemical resistance and resistant to variations in optical finish with abrasion or scratch damage
  • Low impact on viscosity with loading, good suspension stability and good flow behaviour due to the spherical particle shape
Typical Applications
  • Can and coil coatings
  • Wood coatings
  • UV coatings
  • Soft feel coatings
  • Decorative coatings
  • Polymers and Resin Systems
  • Printing Inks
