Fumed Silica & Metal Oxide Dispersions

Large format inkjet printer

Product Overview

AERODISP® products incorporate a range of fumed silica and metal oxides into both aqueous and non-aqueous media. There are options available with regards to the solids content, pH and the surface charge of the dispersions. This allows for their use in a wide variety of coating systems.

Most grades have a low viscosity and don’t thicken systems like the powder AEROSIL® grades do. As a consequence, the formulator can achieve high solid levels whilst still maintaining a workable viscosity. This can give significant improvements in scratch resistance, anti-slip, anti-blocking and pigment/emulsion stability.

Cationic and alumina grades are very popular for high-quality inkjet paper coatings as they are able to fix dyes and pigments, leading to improvements in colour gamut, print uniformity, print resolution and smudge/rub/water resistance.

There are also some speciality grades such as the AERODISP® G 1220 which is used as an anti-blocking agent in PET films. AERODISP® W 1244 is used in the intumescent, silicate-based, layer incorporated into fire-resistant glass.

Product Features
  • Fumed silica, aluminium oxide or titanium dioxide dispersions
  • Various solid loadings available
  • Mostly based on aqueous media but there is also a product carried in glycol and one in MPA
  • Different pH grades available for use in cationic or anionic systems
  • A range of stabilisation salts available for improving compatibilty with your systems
  • Most grades are low viscosity dispersions and don't lead to viscosity build (unlike AEROSIL® grades)
Product Benefits
  • Liquid nature of AERODISP® makes it easy to handle and work with i.e. no dust as is typical with fumed silica powder
  • High ink absorptivity when formulated into photo inkjet paper sizing
  • Can be used as a polishing agent. Increased hardness and scratch resistance
  • Improves the mechanical properties of latex rubber and provides anti-blocking in PET film (AERODISP® G 1220)
  • Used as an anti-slip additive in some systems e.g. paper bags
  • Enhances the colloidal stability of various different systems through a Pickering stabilisation effect
Typical Applications
  • Used in the paper and textile industry to enhance anti-slip properties and create non-slip finishes
  • Photo inkjet papers and coatings for pigment absorption/fixing; reducing water sensitivity and improving colour gamut
  • Increases hardness and scratch resistance in paints
  • Solid particle stabilisation e.g. pigments in aqueous inks
  • Anti-blocking agent in PET films
  • Polishing metal and metal oxide layers

Featured grades with technical datasheets

A brief overview of the key grades with their Technical Datasheets (TDS) is given below.

Key points at a glance:

  • Aqueous dispersion of hydrophilic aluminium oxide. 30% solids by weight.
  • Slightly acidic pH value. Particles have a cationic nature.
  • Used in high-quality inkjet coatings as it is very efficient at fixing dyes, improves drying time and enhances rub/smudge/water resistance. Can help form a transparent, high gloss, microporous coating system.
