Spherical Silica

The raw material for plastic bag in the machine. The plastic bag manufacturing process.

Product Overview

The SPHERILEX® range from Evonik is an innovative technology of precipitated amorphous silica. Produced in a state-of-the-art process, they have a very narrow particle size distribution and a distinctly unique spherical morphology. Different particle sizes are available, however, within each grade, there is a narrow range of sizes to ensure high performance and uniformity. With two main application areas, SPHERILEX® can be split into the Designed Particles and Anti-blocking grades (DP and AB respectively).

For the anti-blocking application, the highly uniform spherical nature of SPHERILEX® ensures lower wear on equipment, good dispersibility and higher masterbatch loadings. The production process also allows for a significantly reduced Coefficient of Friction (CoF) and haze and the low absorption capacities mean less water to vent and a reduction in the absorption of other polymer additives.

For use in coatings, SPHERILEX® provides abrasion and burnish resistance in addition to matting in powder and liquid coatings.

Product Features
  • Precipitated silica with tight particle size distribution and spherical morphology
  • Particle size (d50) of either 4.0 or 5.7 microns, depending on the grade
  • Lower than usual absorption capacity for antiblocking applications
Product Benefits
  • Highly efficient i.e. low dosages allow for optimal clarity and cost engineering
  • Low wear on equipment due to the spherical particle morphology
  • Very effective at reducing Coefficient of Friction (CoF)
  • Low absorption ensures minimal interference with other additives and low oil absorption
  • Excellent burnish resitance
  • Very good washability and scrub resistance
Typical Applications
  • Antiblocking agent for polymer films: polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides and biaxially oriented films
  • Scrub and burnish resistance properties for coatings
  • Matting for powder coatings

Anti-blocking Agents for Plastics

Plastic films sticking together is a problem called film blocking within the polymer industry. This affects end users struggling to separate bin bags as well as manufacturers with production issues. Anti-block agents are designed to resolve film blocking, but choosing the correct one with organic, inorganic, synthetic and natural options can be challenging. Here, we break down what they are, how they work and how to chose the right one.
