What are the benefits of using a surface treated functional filler vs. an untreated one?
The benefits of surface treating fillers for better mechanical properties within polymer systems.
TYTAN™ CP coupling agents are used to chemically modify the surface of fillers and pigments, grafting hydrophobic chains on covalently. Reaction can take place between polar groups and free surface protons on the filler surface, meaning that a wide range of fillers and pigments can be modified. These include talc, barium sulfate, graphite, carbon black, calcium carbonate, silica, glass, organic pigments and metal oxides.
Grafted hydrophobic chains improve dispersion of the modified particles in a variety of polymer systems. As such this can be of benefit for compounding fillers and pigments into materials such as PE, PP, PVC, PBT, ABS and TPE's. Mechanical properties are improved, most notably elongation at break. Higher filler loadings can be achieved. Processability is also improved, allowing for lower extrusion temperatures or higher throughput.
