Coupling Agents

Colourful plastic pellets

Product Overview

TYTAN™ CP coupling agents are used to chemically modify the surface of fillers and pigments, grafting hydrophobic chains on covalently. Reaction can take place between polar groups and free surface protons on the filler surface, meaning that a wide range of fillers and pigments can be modified. These include talc, barium sulfate, graphite, carbon black, calcium carbonate, silica, glass, organic pigments and metal oxides.

Grafted hydrophobic chains improve dispersion of the modified particles in a variety of polymer systems. As such this can be of benefit for compounding fillers and pigments into materials such as PE, PP, PVC, PBT, ABS and TPE's. Mechanical properties are improved, most notably elongation at break. Higher filler loadings can be achieved. Processability is also improved, allowing for lower extrusion temperatures or higher throughput.

Product Features
  • Coupling agent for hydrophobically modifying the surface of inorganic and organic fillers/pigments
  • Reacts with both polar surface groups and free protons
  • Different hydrophobic groups can be grafted onto the surface
Product Benefits
  • Improves the dispersion of fillers and pigments in various polymers, allowing higher loadings whilst maintaining mechanical properties
  • Lower viscosity increase of polymer per unit filler added
  • Improved flow and processability of polymer composites
  • Extrusion temperature can be reduced or throughput increased
  • A wide variety of fillers and pigments can be modified, more so than with organosilanes due to the free proton reaction
  • Better dispersion of fillers improves mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break and stress at break
  • Can be incorporated directly into an extrusion process or pre-treated in a Henschel type mixer
Typical Applications
  • Filled PP
  • Filled flexible PVC
  • Masterbatch
  • Rubber
  • Compound
