Cristobalite is synthetically produced by Quarzwerke by treating quartz sand at a high temperautre of 1500°C in a rotary kiln. This forms a cristobalite shell around a quartz core. As a result whiteness is increased and density reduced. It enjoys the same level of chemical inertness as quartz and so it is a suitable filler and extender in many different applications.
