PU, HASE and Inverse Emulsion Rheology Modifiers

TAFIGEL® rheology modifiers comprise a range of thickener types for water-based systems. TAFIGEL® PUR thickeners work via a HEUR type mechanism, whilst TAFIGEL® AP thicken via an inverse emulsion or HASE mechanism. A whole spectrum of rheological characteristics are achievable with this range: from Newtonian to highly pseudoplastic. Our PU thickeners have a non-ionic structure which allows them to thicken independent of pH whilst also improving compatibility with other formulation ingredients. Viscosity is built (favoured over elasticity) which means low spatter and good pick-up. This makes them an excellent choice for paints, lacquers, emulsion plasters, adhesives, sealants, and printing inks.


    • Based on polyurethane and acrylic co-polymers.

    • Associative or swelling thickeners.

    • A wide range of rheological profiles possible through proper grade selection.

    • Build viscosity over elasticity.

    • Effective over a wide pH range.

    • APE(O)-, VOC- and organotin-free grades.


    • Easy incorporation at any stage of manufacturing.

    • Excellent flow, levelling and gloss characteristics: particularly with the PUR grades.

    • A high level of viscosity build-up and sag resistance: especially with the AP grades.

    • Non-ionic PUR grades have a very broad compatibility with other components of the formulation.

    • Excellent pick-up, reduced brush marks and low spattering.

    • Good colour acceptance in tinting applications. Surfactants have little impact on efficacy of newer generation products.
